History books are written by the winners

A smug young man dominates the foreground, dressed in a green tunic over a red shirt, brown trousers, and leather boots. He holds three swords — two upright in his right hand, one trailing low in his left — and wears a self-satisfied smirk as he glances back over his shoulder. Two more swords lie discarded on the ground at his feet.

To the victor go the spoils. Defeat is a cruel and heavy thing that some cultures never get over. Think of wars of the past such as the conquest of the New World, the troubles in current times, too many examples to count. However, it doesn’t extend just to war but also to abuse of one another. This guy is a bully, leaving friends and families scarred by their behavior. Kids in preschool not playing nice and sharing toys. Victims put out a scent of fear that attracts the victimizer. I know; I was terribly bullied in school, and as a young adult I still put out that scent of fear. My recovery in putting that behind me is a long story that I will gladly share another time. I found the source of that fear, and I learned how to not put out the fear pheromones that attracted harm and danger. I learned how to live as an “impeccable warrior”; it’s quite simple: don’t walk down dark alleys, especially those in your mind. The vision of this poem was inspired by my favorite book, “Stranger in a Strange Land” by Robert A. Heinlein, where the hero, the man from Mars, finally learned about humanity from seeing monkeys at a zoo exert their social structure where the strong mistreated the weak. He laughed for the first time. World history has been dictated by the victors, and I know you can rewrite your story too. Swords are a strange suit that all of us can learn and grow from in its lessons. I await your feedback and comments; it’s a healing process, and we need to find joy in our lives.

The overall mood is one of hollow victory: the winner has taken everything, but the atmosphere — the brooding sky, the retreating figures — suggests the win came at a cost. Note: key words like “bullying, and victim” are preventing Video generation that I normally use for these posts. I didn’t want to water down the conversation to appease the rating system.

Ha, ha, I finally beat you,
and now you’ll get what you deserve!
I’ll never let you forget how you picked on me,
now that I’m the boss, chief, and master.
Go ahead and cry.
I’m bigger and meaner than you’ll ever be.
Ha, ha, I finally beat you!”
