We all know someone who is on the defensive stance thinking that the world is against them so they begin to build a wall of mistrust. Their philosophy is a pre-emptive strike, they have been hurt in the past and they will not let anybody close to their tender center. The fable of the scorpion and the frog illustrates this example where the kind frog gives the scorpion a ride on his back across a stream. As they reach the other side the scorpion stings the frog. In shock the frog asks ‘why would the scorpion repay the frog’s act of kindness in such a manner? The scorpion replied it is in my “nature”. In WW2 there were concerns of a Japanese attack on the west coast particularly of oil fields in Long Beach and the many factories to support the military efforts. One of these was the Lockheed aircraft plant which would have been a prime target. So they hired Walt Disney at his Burbank Studios. His team built a camouflage for the plant that did a mock urban neighborhood with houses, lawns and trees right on top of the huge plant so that it would look like a civilian target rather than a military one to any enemy planes. These were well known techniques of a movie studio and many of these same construction techniques were used when Disneyland opened ten years later in 1955. We all love a magic show where the magician picks our pocket or steals the watch off your wrist. My point is stealth is a defensive move, a strategy of weakening your perceived foe before they have a chance to do damage on ourselves. Stealing the defenses of others,
cunningly, he wages wars.
Victory through intimidation,
relying not on his own power,
but preying on the weaknesses of others.
He is the master spy,
knowing exactly what he is after.
Catching you with your pants down.
And, of course, he unfastened the buckle.
