Becoming Dream Masters Chapter Three

Have you ever dreamt about a friend or relative, and the next day you get a call, a visit, or an e-mail from them saying they were thinking of you? I have, and in my family it happens all the time. I was raised by my grandparents in the Mormon faith. My grandmother was one of 13 children, so there were plenty of aunts and uncles and more cousins than you could shake a stick at, so talk of dream visitations was a common thing to overhear to my young, impressionable ears as a kid.

We were taught as Latter Day Saints to believe that the “spirit world” was very close and real, and we were taught to believe in the gifts of the Spirit that would enable us to pierce “the veil” between those worlds. We were taught that in the dream state you had easy and regular access to those other dimensions. Sometimes a premonition (gift of prophecy) was delivered as a message by a loved one who had passed away. Recent deaths usually meant more and stronger visits because the memories were fresh, and recent deaths were an earmark of “unfinished” business. Family size was important for Mormons of my generation. Big families meant strength, so that veil between the spirit world and our reality could also include the spirits of those yet to be born as well as those who had passed on from this life. We did not call it astral travel, but the connections between the living were enhanced in the dream world. How many times I heard a family member declare, “I just had a dream about you the other night, and I knew you would call.” In no way am I saying that LDS people are more spiritual. I am saying that these beliefs made it easier to be open to spiritual experiences in the metaphysical world, that is, once you got over that “devil or satanic influences” part. So when I learned the new age vocabulary, “inspiration or gifts of the Holy Ghost” became intuition; gifts of prophecy became premonitions, and so on.

To stay on the topic of present-life dreaming, I want to give you a piece of new vocabulary to incorporate into our discussion. Whenever you dream of someone in the dream state, we will call that person—or yourself—a “thought form” to represent that entity. No matter whether they are living, nonliving, dead, or yet to be born; a past life, a future life, an astral projection; or whatever shape they might take—angelic, a cartoon caricature, or a Picasso-style abstract distortion—we will identify them as thought forms.

Lobsang Rampa and one of his many books on his past life as a Tibetan monk.

In my early twenties, I was introduced to the books of Lobsang Rampa. He was a British plumber who started to remember his past lives as a Tibetan monk and the spiritual teachings and a lot of description of how adept the Buddhist monks were at ‘astral travel”.

The details were very fascinating to me. His descriptions of how the Astral plane looked and the rituals that the monks used to access it were described in amazing detail. Now, even by his own admission, he came under a lot of scrutiny that his stories were “made up” fantasy, very much like Carlos Castaneda and his books about his relationship with Don Juan the shaman, who was his guide. These were books that influenced my philosophical development, and before we get into a debate about “real or fantasy,” so were the books by Tolkien, Heinlein, Asimov, and whatever inspired me to understand my “now” and develop tools to use in mastering my everyday life.

Dreams of present life experience have a different flavor, as I suggested. Yes they can have a emotional flavor that can produce tears or laughter. When you dream of a visit from someone who has recent passed away, it brings comfort and reassurance from grief. This is quite different feeling from a subconscious memory dream that taps into a symbolic layer of your identity such as fear, guilt or any of those Freudian stigmas. Get know the difference and the recognition will help both your dreams and the relation to them applying to the developing usage for self growth.

In summary, we are all connected by “aka” threads, as they were described in my Huna training. The cutting or binding of these threads is a karmic cleansing process. When someone, whether they are close or distant, is continually on your mind, you might consider that a breadcrumb—an invitation to venture down a rabbit hole of discovery to find out the meaning of that prompt. As an actor, we would call for “line” in rehearsal from a person who was following the rehearsal with a copy of the script to make sure the action kept on track. So you can use this prompt to ask for any answer and resolution before you go to sleep. With my friends on Substack and other platforms who practice “modern mediumship,” who, like me, see the veil between worlds as very thin, there is a reference in the Old Testament of the Bible I draw upon that illustrates this perfectly. It goes to the story of Saul, who had the distinction of being the first king of Israel who was consecrated by Samuel the prophet. Samuel was a recognized authority as a prophet, a figure that the Hebrew people would accept as being the mouthpiece for God, to do the choosing for them. For many years, the Israelites were ruled by various judges who had the authority to enforce the laws. However, this was a system of following the tradition of law, yet it could not make new laws or decrees that could affect the future. This is why Samuel was chosen to find Saul. Now Saul was very new at the role of king and relied heavily on the advice and guidance of Samuel. Let’s just say Saul was a very insecure leader who lacked self-confidence. Well, Samuel was very old, even for biblical days, and he died. This left Saul without the guidance of his most trusted advisor. Yes, he had generals and administrators to help him rule, but not anyone who was the literal word of God! For a while Saul tried, yet he was frozen and couldn’t make a decision on his own (talk about co-dependency), and he had to make a hard one about a way to defeat the Philistines in battle. So in his frustration, his advisors convinced him to seek out a woman who lived in Endor who was familiar with spirits (the term “witch” was only used in King James’ time) to help Saul communicate with the spirit of the departed Samuel. The first séance in the Bible! Well, the woman conjured up Samuel, and he gave poor old Saul a “royal” chewing out. I mean, it was an epic tongue-lashing. First, because Samuel was so happy in paradise, and that annoyed him to high heaven (couldn’t resist, lol). He was also annoyed at Saul’s impotence as a ruler, probably misdirected, as Samuel probably should have weaned Saul from the prophetic teat before his death. In any case, it was a scolding that Saul would never forget. I’ve always found it interesting that the gifts of the spirit were given to this woman, and nowhere does it suggest they were fake; in fact, the true and real spirit of Samuel was evident from the session and never refuted in the biblical account. In fact, it supports the claim because she did not conjure up just anyone—no, he was the prophet and mouthpiece for almighty God! (Reference: 1 Samuel 28:3–25.)

Whether you call it the astral plane, the spirit world, or the fourth dimension, your sleeping mind makes it real, because it’s all in your head—a private space—yet it’s an experience we all have and share with each other, even the family dog when he’s dreaming of chasing rabbits.
